2015 SVRA Brickyard Invitational

Genius Garage competes at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway June 10-14, 2015
We have arrived at the "Racing Capital of the World": The Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the SVRA Brickyard Invitational! It's already been a long morning for the geniuses; time for a quick shade break. We passed tech inspection, so now it's time to go back to the pits and set up a game plan. Casey works with Max and Nate to clean up and organize some of the Corvette parts. Our boys are super serious. All hands in on the engine! Keeping the car clean is just as important as keeping it mechanically sound. Sometimes you really have to lay into it to get to those hard-to-reach spots. Chris and Fed work together to secure the seat belts and check the driver's radio. Gotta keep the tents from blowing away; tires work well as weights. A view of the Genius Garage setup at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway; what a great spot! The team gets right to work; it's been an early morning, but everyone is revved up and ready to go! Casey takes a few minutes of mental preparation before heading onto the track. Michael shares some words of wisdom with Casey as he gets ready to race. Zach and Casey exchange some last words before heading to the false grid. The team works together to give the car a head start to the false grid. Look at it go! 5 minute warning. The team gives Casey some last minute support. Time for one last picture on the false grid before the race! Time to race! One last look at the car before it hits the track. It sure is great to see the #3 Corvette in the top 5 on the iconic Indianapolis placement pole. The guys eagerly await the arrival of their bright yellow Corvette during practice. The team is eager to hop over the wall and get right to work taking tire temps. The team gets ready to push the car out of the hot pits, just as soon as they check out the scoreboard. Casey stops to pit in during the first practice run. All hands on deck to perfect the tuning before the next outing. Michael Murray preps the Corvette for pin-striping a design on the nose. Mentor Michael Murray preps the paint that he will be applying for the design. Michael discusses pin-striping techniques with the students while creating unique design. Michael is almost finished! He looks so heroic with his GoPro Hero camera, doesn't he? The boys are all business moving the car to the track. And he's off! The Corvette heads to the false grid to line up for the race. The Genius Garage is first to the false grid for day two. The Corvette is gridded third at Indy; isn't it incredible what these students have accomplished! Federico is there to help push the car off the false grid. Our team sure does look official; and to think, they are only college students. The car is looking great out there on the track. Casey puts his heart and soul into racing, and it definitely shows! The Corvette comes speeding down the front straight, started off in 10th but finished in 3rd in practice. Casey plays cat-and-mouse for a while with this red Oldsmobile. The Corvette is really easy to spot on the track! Bright yellow is the way to go. Another great shot of the car on track. Those NASCARs are pretty quick and offer some really great competition for the Corvette. Passing the red Porsche, entering and exiting Turn 1 with swiftness and speed is Casey's game. Casey waves to the crowd as the race finishes and cool down laps begin. Casey was in the cockpit of the non-airconditioned Corvette in high temperatures on an asphalt track while wearing 3 layers of protective gear. Daniel Miller has volunteered his time and efforts to help a good friend of Genius Garage's, Jim Webb, with his IndyCar. Jim Webb is pretty quick on the track! The field for the IndyCars is very tight; lots of competitors with wide and fast cars can be dangerous in some of these turns. As a reward for the students' great research papers, they get to participate in a short autocross hosted by Jaguar. Nathan, AKA Farmboy, gets the first ride in the new Jaguar F-Type in the autocross. Do we look like a professional IndyCar team?

2015 Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix

Genius Garage takes on the Pittsburgh track July 9-12, 2015
We've just arrived at Pittsburgh and everyone is already hard at work; Taylor is taking photos while Clint, Dan, and Nathan take apart the car. Digging in to the car is first on the list. The team heads over to the skidpad for a couple of runs, but first they help a disabled car exit the skidpad. Casey and Chris are ready to take on the skidpad in the Viper and BMW, respectively. Chris and Casey zoom around the skidpad. Dan is geared up and ready to go! Inside Chris Scherzer's BMW sliding around the skidpad (safely, of course). Pittsburgh has a great facility for racing, skidpad, autocross, and go-karting! Back to the pits to get ready for their first race! Chris talks to Casey before the start of the race to double check everything is in order. Casey passes some lap traffic during the first run of the day. The yellow Corvette takes the lead! Time to exit the track and prepare for the next outing! Lunchtime selfie! Casey and some other drivers volunteer their lunch hours to give track rides for charity. How many geniuses does it take to save the keys from a team member's locked car? Chris and Clint work on changing tires before the next outing. Casey and Zach work on replacing tires. Just a few more adjustments... Dan has found his new "thinking space" in the trailer to do his set-up sheets. A few more adjustments and changes before the next outing. The car is just about to start up for the next outing as team members take their places to check for possible leaks or other racing hazards. One last push before lining up to go on track from Chris, Clint, Dan, and Zach. The team waits with Casey outside the false grid to wait for cross-traffic to clear. Thumbs up from the number 3 Corvette as it flies down the front straight! Our Corvette catches up to another Corvette in the group on the 2nd lap. A well-deserved go-karting session where each team member tests their racing ability on the miniature track. Zach Sroka plays Clint's ukelele for the team and spectators passing by the pits.
